Baghdad was famously designed as a circle, while New York is well known for its grid pattern. But cities around the world have been designed in all sorts of fascinating shapes and patterns!
🔎 Become a City Detective
Use Google Maps or Google Earth to explore different cities around the world. Can you find cities with unusual or interesting layouts?
Look for cities with:
⭕ Circular or ring patterns
⭐ Star-shaped designs
🔺 Triangle patterns
🕸️ Radial or wheel-and-spoke layouts
✈️ Shapes that look like objects or animals
🌳 Garden-city designs
🌍 Investigate Your Discoveries
Choose at least three cities and find out:
📍 Where is the city?
🏙️ What pattern or shape does it have?
🧠 Why was it designed this way?
🗺️ Can you show the pattern using a map or screenshot?
For example, Canberra, Australia has a planned wheel-and-spoke layout with geometric features, while Brasília, Brazil was deliberately designed around major axes and is famously described as resembling an aeroplane from above.
